First, they would go east and east from the Kingdom of Castile to the New Worlds, they would pass them and after it, they would go to the Spices Land ( also called the Maluku Islands ot Moluccas). After all this, the boats with the spices would return to the Iberian Peninsula, to the Kingdom of Castile

Magellan, as other explorers and cartographers was convinced that there was a passage connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Magellan thought that the passage they were looking for was the Plata River, but the was wrong.

Of course he knew that the passage would make trading heasier and faster.

When his expedition reached the Plata River, in South America, they spent more than a month studying its estuary until they realised that it was not the passage.

Afterwards, they set sail to the South were they later found the Strait of Magellan.

This change in their calculations made more difficult their whole voyage.

3.4 The Fleet

3.4.1 How did Magellan´s expedition started?

The aim of Christopher Columbus´s voyages to the west had been to reach the Indies and to establish commercial relations between Castile and the Asian kingdoms. The spanish soon realized that the lands of the America were not a part of Asia, but a new continent. The Treaty of Tordesillas reserved for Portugal the eastern routes that went around Africa, and Vasco de Gama and the Portuguese arrived in India in 1498. It became urgent for Spain to find a new commercial route to Asia, and after the Junta de Toro conference of1505, the Spanish Crown set out to descover a route to the west. Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa reached the Pacific Ocean in 1513 after crossing the Isthmus of Panama, and Juan Daz de Sols died in Ro de la Plata in 1516 while exploring South America in the service of Castile.

3.4.2 What happened to him in the end ?

In the Philippines Islands, they had problems with the indians that lived there, so a war broke up and the indians killed Magellan, so Elcano took the position of captain in the expedition and then he finished it.
Magellan´s voyage led to Limasawa, Cebu, Mactan, Palawan, Brunei, Celebes and finally to the Spice Islands.

*Pigafetta and Ginés de Mafra provided written documents of the events culminating in Magellan´s death:
"When morning came, forty-nine of us leaped into the water u to our thighs, and walked through water for more than two cross - bow flights before we could reach the shore. The boats could not approach nearer because of certain rocks in the water. The other men remained behind to guard the boats. When we reached land, they had formed in three divisions to the number of more than one thousand five hundred people. When they saw us, they charged down upon us with exceeding loud cries... The musketeers and crossbow-men shot from a distance for about a half hour, but uselessly... Recognizing the captain, so many turned upon him that they knocked his helmet off his head twice ... A native hurled a bamboo spear into captain´s face, but the latter inmddiately killed him with his lance, which he left in the native´s body. Then,
trying to lay hand on sword he could draw it out but halfway, because he had been wounded in the arm with a bamboo spear. When the natives saw that, they all hurled themselves upon him. One of them wounded him on the left leg with a large cutlass, which resembles a scimitar, only being larger. That caused the captain to fall face downward, when inmediately they rushed upon him with iron and bamboo sèars and with their cutlasses, until they killed our mirror, our light, our confort, and our true guide. When they wounded him, he tourned back many times to see whether we were all in the boats.
